Bob Janules, HAS member, will be presenting the 2nd half of his photography demonstration, continuing his concentration on nature photography.

This time he will concentrate on fractual images using the computer as a form of digital art. It continues his love of nature, by exploring patterns, abstractions and textures.

When he first took up nature photography a few years ago he wasn't expecting it to be the learning and transforming experience it has become. When he talks of learning he is not speaking about learning photography as much as he is about nature itself.

He will be presenting a power point presentation explaining what the term "nature photography" means to him and how his sensibilities have been framed by the inspiration he received from the work of famed photographer Eliot Porter. It was one of Porter's books, "Natures Chaos", that introduced Bob to the concept of fractal geometry.

This promises to be a fascinating presentation, so bring your friends and family and learn about the world of fractal images. The presentation will be at the Lawrence Barn in Hollis, on Wednesday February 8th at 7pm.

Paula Furlong has resided in Hollis with her family for 12 years. Paula is a painter and a potter, although she loves oil she enjoys dabbling in all mediums. Her focus in pottery involves organic hand built vases and contemporary wall sculptures. Paula’s Hollis studio, The Art Junction, is where art is created as well as taught. Classes in pottery and fine arts are taught to all ages with an emphasis on creativity. Currently Paula has been enjoying and exploring knife painting. Her inspiration comes from local vistas and she enjoys bold color and texture.

Did you ever get to the point in your career of an artist where you wished you would do more to market yourself but don't know where to start?
Taking pictures of your paintings, work on these pictures to make them computer ready, start blogs and maintains blogs are all skills that are invaluable to today's artists.
Also finding galleries, knowing how to approach these galleries, what to send and not to send, how to frame or how to mat a painting, what is in vogue and not in vogue in the Art World, all this information is important if you want to make it as a successful artist.
We will talk about resumes, personal statements and organizing newspapers clips.
There is also all kind of information about Associations and which ones are the best for you..
Also many artists go into too many directions, they don't know where to focus and what to disregard in their creations. They need guidance and encouragement..
Another big issue is how to contact newspapers, create publicity for yourself using Facebook, magazines, newspapers,Twitter, Google and newsletters
For help in all these issues, Jacqui Hawk and myself are starting a small consulting business for artists.We would give lessons on all these issues or would do the work for the artist if they are too busy to do it themselves..We would follow them to their openings, take pictures or videos of their paintings and edit them.
We would upload them to their personal blogs or send the PR to newspapers.
We would be available to meet privately or in a group.
In the past 30 years, along with painting full time, I did a lot of volunteering in the Art World including the Publicity, the Demos and the Historian for the Nashua Artists Association. I organized 50 years of Art History for their books.
I now manage this blog and many others for myself, professional galleries and artists.
.During my career as an artist, I joined many association and exhibited in Museums where I was awarded prestigious awards. I also joined many top galleries among which the the Copley Society of Boston.
It just dawned on me that I could share this journey of mine with other artists.
Jacqui Hawk is also an accomplished artist who has been doing a tremendous amount of marketing and gathers great crowds thanks to her positive energy and charisma.

HOLLIS – Hollis Arts Society member Jacqui Hawk is the October artist of the month at RE/MAX Properties, 2 Ash St.

Hawk, a native of Edinburgh, Scotland, began her career in the arts more than 20 years ago. She is a corporate education manager at UMass Lowell and now resides in Dunstable, Mass. The public is invited to meet the artist at the artist reception from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The exhibit is open except when the conference room doors must be closed for business purposes.

The exhibit will run for the entire month of October.

BIOGRAPHY
Jacqui Hawk

Jacqui Hawk, a native of Edinburgh, Scotland began her career in the arts over 20 years. She is a Corporate Education Manager at UMass Lowell and now resides in Dunstable MA.

Each of her paintings is emotional in nature and a metaphor for her life’s journey, from Scottish origins, travels around the world, personal struggles and challenges. It embodies the magic and whimsical illusions of a child and the strength and wisdom of a woman with an old soul. Her work is intuitive in nature and very spontaneous and always reflects what is going on inside of her.

She works mainly in mixed media, including acrylics, oils, wax, pearlescent powders, gesso of different consistencies, stained glass pieces, decoupage, and unusual objects she finds washed up on the beach. Her recent compositions are organic and primitive in nature and reveal a range of emotions from sadness, hope, peace, renewal, right through to euphoric joy.

She is drawn again and again to beautiful ancient oak trees. “There is something so magical and stoic about them which resonates with me… from the roots that forage underground with determined courage to find their way to lofty blue skies and weather the strongest storms, yet remain steadfast in their purpose”.

More recently she has been lured by the beauty and replenishment of the seashore. Her most recent collection is called “Holding on and Letting Go”… this collection symbolizes how we hold on to love, memories, respect, boundaries and “Let Go” of outcomes. Her paintings show the energy and beauty of the sea… as it ebbs and flows….as it delivers and takes away…. and reminds us of the ever evolving treasures life reveals.

Teresa Moler is an artist, puppeteer, and selectman. Moler’s interest in art peaked in the 90’s when she studied visual arts at Rivier College. Moler’s passion for art only grew as she went to Keene State College and received a minor in visual arts.
Teresa Moler has exhibited with the Hollis Art Society and at Greeley Park with Nashua Area Artist’s Association. Moler does watercolor, acrilyics, and mixed media. She has recently studied with Suzanne Binnie and Marilene Sawaf.
Besides visual arts, Moler is a polished puppeteer, performing for over 35 years.
Teresa Moler can also be found involved in political events.

The Hollis Arts Society announces its new Fine Art exhibit at Gallery West Pearl at 100 West Pearl Street in Nashua NH (located in the Community Council Building).
The exhibit will open with the theme: “Sensations of Change”.
The new Community Council gallery will feature a variety of art of different media created by members of the Hollis Arts Society, which will be available for purchase. HAS donates a percentage of the proceeds to support the ongoing work of the Community Council.
The new exhibit will run from June through September, 2011.

The General Public is invited to the Artist Reception on Thursday, June 2, 2011 from 5 - 8 pm to meet with the Artists and browse the Gallery. Musical entertainment will be provided and refreshments will be served.

Hollis Arts Society announces a Fine Art Exhibit by Pat Hurd at Burque Jewelers, located at 89 West Pearl Street, Nashua. The exhibit will remain through the month of April.

Pat is a native of Nashua, with deep ties to the community, as a healthcare leader in New England. She is an RN with a BS degree from Rivier College and a degree from St.Joseph College in Health Care Administration. After a highly successful and satisfying professional career, Pat took her first art lesson at Rivier College in the RISE program in 2004.
Pat's art work displays her love for God's creation, through the beauty of magnificent vivid color and its manifestation within nature. Painting is Pat's joy in life, and it's her
privilege and personal honor to share this joy with you!

Pat has won awards for her watercolor paintings. She has exhibited her work throughout Southern N.H.and Sharon Arts Gallery. Pat is president of the Hollis Arts Society.

Biography

Sarah R S Roche, a native New Englander, began her career in the
creative arts over 40 years ago. She graduated from the Rhode Island School of
Design ith a major in painting and a degree in art education. Her post
graduate studies have included classes at the League of NH Craftsmen; the de
Cordova Museum; the Taos Institute; private classes in encaustics and in gel
printing. She has been studying Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging for
the past 8 years.

Sarah is a self-taught photographer and has been working with digital
cameras for the past 12 years. She prints, mats and frames most her
work, only using outside help for extra large pieces.

Over the years her view of the world with a camera has become one of the
bits and pieces and fragments, color and shapes. Only her flower
photographs have remained virtually unchanged although that is beginning to change
and becoming more abstract. Her vision is to concentrate on patterns of the
whole and unique images that occur out of context with the real world.

Her professional memberships included, the Hollis Arts Society, the
Cambridge Art Association, the Concord Art Association, the Art League
of Lowell, the Arts League of Rhode Island, and the Nashua Area Artists
Association.

Sarah has been in many exhibitions and has had a few one person shows.
All of her photographic images are signed limited editions.

Biography
New England artist Colette employs pastel and watercolor mediums to express her works. Fine detail is her trademark as is reflected in her paintings. Her love for art demonstrated itself very early in her life and has been a satisfying form of expression through every phase of her life.
Colette works mostly from photographs which were taken by her late husband. She chose pastels as the preferred medium in her landscapes because they can create a mood which brings to the viewer a sense of peace and comfort. Her love of landscapes are reflected in her detailed paintings of Cape Cod, Sedona, and San Francisco.
Colette has shown her work in a number of local venues in one woman shows and juried shows.
She has studied with Elizabeth Rosson, Harriet Winchester, Linda Obremski, the Sharon Arts Center and the New Hampshire Institute of Art.

HOLLIS ARTS SOCIETY HONORARY MEMBER LILLIAN COOPER ART EXHIBIT

Honorary member of the Hollis Arts Society, Lillian Cooper, age 99, is the first member to show her work in our latest venue, Burque Jewelers, located at 89 West Pearl Street, Nashua. The exhibit, in two of the front windows of the store, will remain through the month of February.

Lillian is a native of Lowell and long time Chelmsford resident. Her love of art star...ted in childhood when she would spend hours with her sketchbook. It remained a hobby until she signed up for a basic drawing course at Lowell State Teacher's College in the 1940's. More courses at other schools continued until she mastered the portrait and turned her attention to landscapes and marine painting in the 1960's.

Her work is quintessential New England art. Lillian had her first one-man show at the Parker Gallery in Lowell in 1963 and has been accepted into many juried shows over the years winning many awards on all levels. She is a long time member of the Copley Society in Boston as well as the Concord Art Association, the Lowell Art Association and many more. She taught art in the Lowell area schools for many years as well as teaching private classes.

HOLLIS ARTS SOCIETY SPONSORS ‘ZENTANGLE’ WORKSHOP

The Hollis Arts Society will sponsor a workshop at the Hollis Town Hall on March 12 from 1 pm until 4 pm. Suzanne Binnie, the instructor, is a well known acclaimed watercolor artist and teacher. Suzanne also loves to work in mixed media. Her latest passion is Zentangle ©.

Suzanne studied at Penn State University and Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. She has been enteri...ng shows and exhibiting her art in various galleries for many years. Culhaven Studios is the name of the company Suzanne and her husband Peter run from their home in Hollis.

The name Zentangle has been developed and copyrighted by Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts and describes what is essentially a structured and contained doodle. It is, however, doodling with the intention of producing a finished piece of art. You do not have to be an artist to Zentangle, as there is no correct way to complete a piece.

The Zentangle process is fun and relaxing. It is a series of deliberate pen and ink strokes made on a piece of art paper measuring about 4" square, often with unexpected results.

Come and experience the joy in learning about this fun new art form, and leave with your own newly-created works of art. No previous art experience is necessary. Art supplies provided.

Registration is required by March 4.

December meeting at the Barn

At the HAS Dec. meeting, Stephen Redic, of Candia, NH, was riveting. He performed his words in a most engaging presentation. EVERYone loved his delivery, humor, & the wordsmith in him. Quite a prolific and wildly imaginative person with his word pictures. His dramatic readings and beautifully modulated voice kept us all enthralled ......and clapping. A truly delightfully enchanting hour.

He created new and original poems for about 12 members' paintings that were emailed to him prior to the meeting. Also, performed some of his own notable ones, some 10 or more, and we were asking for him to continue doing more........

They ranged from deeply heart-rending to extremely clever to refreshingly humorous. None were shabbily addressed.

What do Japanese pottery, great food and the music of James Taylor have in common? The Hollis Arts Society’s annual gala.

Members of the society invite anyone interested in the age-old question “What exactly is art?” to attend. A wide spectrum of artists’ talents will be on display to answer that question.

The celebration has been offering awe-inspiring culture to attendees for five years. Jacqueline Hawk, publicist for the event, describes it as a Hollis tradition held in the historic Lawrence Barn, a unique, English-style structure. “The area is rich in artistic talent of many mediums, and this event is a wonderful showcase for the nonprofit society,” Hawk said.

The gala is described by the society as one of Hollis’ landmark events, and it’s free to attend. In fact, if you’re an artist, you’re invited to ask about becoming a member of the organization.

More than 75 artists will be offering paintings, ceramics, woodworking and multimedia. Attendees are sure to find that perfect gift for the holiday giving season, or even for their own portfolio.
One of the visual artists, Alene Sirott-Cope, will display her raku stoneware, jewelry, clocks and more.

Sirott-Cope said raku is an ancient form of Japanese pottery firing using a process that’s performed outdoors. The procedure uses fire and smoke to create unique patterns, colors and designs in the glaze.
“The artwork is outstanding, the refreshments are wonderful and the entertainment is a lot of fun,” Sirott-Cope said. “Hollis Arts Society member Kim Riley sings all of my favorite James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt songs every year.”
Sirott-Cope, a potter and polymer clay artist, has been a member of the Hollis Arts Society since its inception. Her work can be found in several local galleries, including Design Wares and Ancient Moon, both in Nashua. Celebrities such as singer Michael Bolton also are customers of Sirott-Cope’s.
The society is sure to satisfy all senses at the gala. The visual art will, of course, satisfy sight and even touch in some cases, while the delicious food provided by the society will fulfill both taste and smell cravings. Finally, the sound of classical music produced by the society’s Performing Arts Guild will provide the perfect serenade.
Another artist who’s sure to impress is Albine Vermot-Gaud, a native of Paris who now resides in Hollis.

Hawk said Vermot-Gaud enjoys painting local scenes. One painting of interest is the ice house in the Woodmont Orchards in Hollis. The structure has been restored to historic landmark.
“Albine is a self-taught artist who enjoys ‘Les Fauves’ school of art, where color and shapes define the painting,” Hawk said.
The gala is just one way that the society reaches out to the community at large. Hawks said it also helps with the professional development of artists.
This development includes monthly meetings; an implementation of an art gallery at the Community Council, 100 W. Pearl St., Nashua; and new shows that open every four months. There is also participation in Hollis Old Home Day.

Hawk further explains there are membership drive soirees and an Arts Connection program, which includes group trips to museums, festivals and lectures.

“Unique shows like ‘Art Under Glass’ showcased our fine arts in partnership with a program to revitalize empty retail stores in cities nationwide,” Hawk said. “We also provide a teaching program on a volunteer basis for the Nashua Community Council, which includes classes in all mediums.”

Her paintings are the culmination of her life's journey to date that begun in the culturally rich and stimulating environment of Edinburgh, Scotland, and further travels to Europe and Australia. Her work is emotional in nature. Jacqui tries to coax the invisible out and make it visible - each piece has a voice and a story to share.

ART IN THE GARDEN -- OPEN STUDIO

Albine Vermot-Gaud, a long-time Hollis resident and French native is inviting the public to her traditional summer event, ART IN THE GARDEN - OPEN STUDIO on Saturday July 17 and Sunday July 18, from 10 to 4 (rain or shine), at 35 Deer Run Road in Hollis.

She will be showing a large selection of her well-known landscapes and other imaginative paintings in oil, watercolor and mixed media. She will also display her recent body of colorful abstract artwork.

Three other local artists were invited to participate and show their work at this event: Alene Sirott-Cope, also from Hollis, who will unveil a new line of whimsical polymer creations to including clocks and wearable art in addtion to classic raku pottery. Metal sculptor George Eros, who works under the tutelage of well-known sculptor John Weidman of the Andres Art Institute, will display a selection of metal sculptures in different sizes. Mary Giacobbe, painter and accomplished musician, will complete and complement the artistic offerings with her pastel face drawings where the intriguing mood of her characters are captured with minimum lines in a partially abstract design.

Vermot-Gaud is inviting all art lovers to come and take in the art, meet the artists and enjoy the gardens to the sounds of popular French tunes in commemoration of Bastille Day. Light refreshments will be served in the gazebo.

The Hollis Arts Society is excited to announce it's newest exhibit venue in downtown Nashua, entitled "Art Under Glass". Enhancing the storefront window at 100 Main Street , it follows the concept of a nationwide phenomenon now taking place in many cities throughout the United States in which empty storefronts exhibit art in all media.

This creative approach provides local artists an opportunity to expose their artwork to a larger public, and at the same time rejuvenate and beautify the cityscapes affected by the economy. Coordinator Meri Goyette has been employing this idea for a number of months, displaying artwork and crafts of all mediums while adding beauty and interest to the Nashua shopping district.

The members of the Hollis Arts Society will be exhibiting their work to all who pass by from July 2 to August 31. 2010.

Announcement to Hollis Arts Society members.
Art Under Glass is a storefront venue exhibit for the Hollis Arts Society at 100 Main Street Nashua from July 2-August 31. Members may display one item of art behind the window in a locked area. Delivery of art will be July 1st between 4-6pm no exceptions. Because of the large interest, a small dimension is preferred and every effort will be made to exhibit all artwork. Each item will be assigned a number with a corresponding “legend” in the window with art details, as well as my email address for any questions on purchasing. A commission of 13% will be required on any sold items, as per the Gala. June 19 is the deadline to send me your exhibit request.

Description: Be transported to another time and place with the mysterious and vibrant paintings of Hollis, NH, artist Marilene Sawaf, now on view through May 3 in the Tower Gallery at New Hampshire Antique Co-op. Sawaf's richly patterned canvases are reminiscent of Medieval stained glass and Oriental carpets.

Influenced by past cultures, Sawaf paints reflections of women in flowered dresses set against Venetian arcades and marbled, checked floors. Often her canvases show a world filled with music and poetry woven like a tapestry with vibrant reds, golds, and blues. "I try to create an illusion, painting women in rich, patterned dresses who make you wonder who they are and what they are doing," says Sawaf. Her landscapes are inspired by the countries in which she has lived and by the colors of the Post-Impressionist school, with moods taking precedence over realism.

Marilene Sawaf’s work has received numerous award recognitions throughout New England. In addition to several solo and collective exhibits, Sawaf’s paintings have been exhibited at the Currier Museum of Art (Manchester, NH) and the Whistler House Museum (Lowell, Mass.). Sawaf is a member of the New Hampshire Art Association, the Nashua Area Art Association and the Sharon Art Center in Peterborough.

Last Sunday some of our members went hiking in Brookline and viewed many sculptures hidden in the hills. The opening of the Symposium directed by John Weidman was in the city hall of Brookline, NH. Every year they invite artists from all around the world to come and sculpt in plein air. They get free lodging and create new sculptures for the mountain.

In the back are shown some houses of Lebanon with the traditional Venitian arcades which can be seen in all the old homes of Lebanon where I spent 15 years of my life and went to college. We used to go in all those old villages and take pictures and measurements of the old houses for our architectural projects. This was before the civil war started in a Lebanon that was smiling and friendly to strangers. Elizabeth was born here. She is a first born immigrant in the Sawaf family. In her blood still runs the blood of a woman of syrian- lebanese descent

Three local artists have joined to host an open studio and plein air art show and sale on Saturday and Sunday, July 11 and 12, 10-4 PM (rain or shine) at 35 Deer Run Road in South Hollis.

In addition to classic raku pottery, Alene Sirott-Cope, also from Hollis, will unveil a new line of unique wearable art and jewelry, whimsical polymer clocks and many other unique creations. Jewelry maker Stephanie Jay will show a large selection of original beaded jewelry with something for everyone.

Visitors are invited to take in the arts and crafts, visit the gardens and enjoy light French refreshments in the Gazebo to the sound of popular French tunes in celebration of upcoming Bastille Day!

"This collaboration created two suncatchers & a 'wearable art' necklace: Ruth Bodycott painted & signed the original watercolors. Each piece is painted on D'arches watercolor paper. The two pink magnolias are painted on front & back each so they are reversible, then carefully cut out. The Jefferson Memorial has the cherry blossom design painted on the back mimicking the wire design. Heidi Farrow then suspended these originals between glass, sealed them in with unleaded solder & created the cherry blossom wire design. To the necklace she added a sterling silver chain & Swarovski crystal beads."

This necklace has no clasps to fiddle with and can fit anyone. It is very light-weight and just rests on your neck. Made of purple iridescent stained-glass with scalloped-edge border of lead-free silver-bearing solder. Accented by spirals made of non-tarnish silver wire. The collar is made from memory-wire covered with silver glass rocaille beads. It sells for $90.
